"Poor man's concrete" isn't a real engineering term — it's slang for a cheaper, homemade substitute for proper ready-mix concrete, usually made by stretching a mix with more sand/aggregate and less cement, or using an entirely different material (like compacted gravel, road base, or asphalt millings) in concrete's place. It can work for very low-stakes, non-structural uses, but it isn't a substitute for real concrete anywhere load-bearing.
Where the term comes from
It shows up in DIY and homesteading circles as a way to describe stretching a small cement budget — mixing a leaner cement-to-aggregate ratio than a standard structural mix, or substituting compacted gravel, crushed stone, or even asphalt millings for a poured slab in low-stakes applications like a garden path or a shed footing.
Where it's genuinely fine
For something with no real load and no consequence if it settles or erodes a bit over time — a garden path, temporary equipment staging, a rustic stepping surface — a compacted gravel or lean-mix substitute can be a perfectly reasonable, cheaper choice.
Where it's a real risk
Anywhere that needs to bear vehicle weight, support a structure, or hold back soil is the wrong place for a cut-rate substitute. A leaner mix has less compressive strength and worse freeze-thaw durability — exactly the properties that matter for a driveway, a foundation, or a retaining wall in a climate with real winter freeze-thaw cycling. A driveway poured with an under-strength mix will crack and spall years earlier than one built to standard PSI.
The honest takeaway
If you're trying to save money on a real structural pour, the better lever is usually reducing scope (a smaller footprint, simpler finish) rather than cutting mix quality — a proper mix on a smaller slab beats a cut-rate mix on a bigger one almost every time, in terms of what it actually costs you over the concrete's lifespan.
